Sappy Family Fun

We went to the annual Pancake Breakfast and Silent Auction at Elsa's preschool on Saturday morning. This event is 90% fundraiser, 10% celebration of the end of maple sugar time (the Audubon Center makes its own maple syrup).

We had a really good time at this event. The pancakes were delicious and the maple syrup was even better, as you can see from Elsa's clean plate and smiling face.

Claire refused to eat any pancakes (she refuses to eat basically anything other than baby food, puffs, and yogurt melts). But she did get to see her boyfriend, Ethan. Ethan is Elsa's friend Aaron's little brother. Every time Ethan sees Claire, he shrieks, "Baby! Baby!" and practically tackles her. In his "love" for her, he's pushed her over and bonked her head on the cement floor at least twice. But for some reason, Claire usually still smiles when she sees him.

After breakfast, we checked out the silent auction—we didn't end up buying anything, but we did contribute a pair of Brewers tickets to be auctioned off. We also went out to see the maple trees. The kids in each class have their own tree and they are responsible for collecting the sap from that tree.

And we looked at the "sugar shack" (who knew there actually is such a thing?), where they boil the sap.

Finally, here are a few fun facts that we learned about maple syrup:
- The northeastern U.S. is the only place in the world where maple syrup is produced. (Wisconsin ranks fourth in syrup production.)
- It takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of maple syrup.

So if nothing else, now you know why maple syrup is so expensive.

That's always when she looks like me, when she makes a face like that. : )

We loved seeing Elsa enjoying her pancake event and she seems to love the concept of her school. The picture by the tree is cute. We miss Elsa and Claire and can't wait to see them in May.

Love, Grandma B.

Hey Elsa,
GiGi knows all about cooking down sap to get that precious maple syrup - also all about carrying pail after pail of sap up to the sugar shack to be dumped in huge tins and cooked down to syrup - some of the syrup was later cooked down further and poured into little molds (by your Great-Great Grandma) to make maple sugar candies. I lived on a farm with acres of hardwood trees - many of which were maple.
Have a fun Easter with your little sister and your cousins.
Love you all.!!! GiGi
