November Highlights
November was full of leaf activities, harvest fun, and finding out what animals and plants are doing to get ready for winter. The children cut open pumpkins and found the seeds inside. Some made pumpkin pies and other tasty foods from the pumpkins.
Farmer's Market
Each classroom set up a farmer's market with fruits, vegetables, and a cash register. The children enjoyed weighing pumpkins, writing down prices, and pretending to buy and sell produce, just like they see their families do.
Raking Leaves
The leaves were abundant and the children raked them into large piles, then jumped in them. They even buried each other with the leaves.
Seed Dispersal
We continued our search for seeds dispersing in the prairie, finding burdock seeds "hitching a ride," and milkweed seeds "parachuting" to likely spots that will allow them to grow.
December Nature Experiences
In December we will continue to find out what animals are doing to get ready for winter. We will also be searching for trees that don't lose their leaves and enjoying any holiday celebrations that our families want to share.
Evergreen Trees
Now that the leaves are off the trees, the children will be exploring the trees that stay green all winter long. These conifers, or evergreens, dot the nature center property throughout.
Animals Preparing for Winter
Animals prepare for winter in different ways. Some hibernate, others migrate, and still others store their food and grow warmer fur so they can stay active in the winter. Even some insects overwinter in various stages of development. We will continue exploring the nature center for all the ways animals are getting ready for winter.
Winter Solstice and Holiday Traditions
With the approach of the holiday season, we will focus on what is happening with the change of seasons and the winter solstice. If your family has any special traditions that they would like to share, please let your teachers know and maybe you and your child can share them with the rest of their class.
